Case Study

An Ordinariate Parish Website Redesigned

The Problem

St. Alban’s Ordinariate Roman Catholic Church (2012–2024) in Rochester, NY, needed to engage newcomers to visit in person. They were great at impressing and keeping visitors once they walked in the door, and so the website’s role was to persuade newcomers to come in person for Mass.

But the website was on the eCatholic platform with an eCatholic theme that was outdated. Over the years it had drifted away from the parish branding, and the content had become fragmented.  In addition, the website text was written for members who are already familiar with the parish. But that writing style was not complete and engaging enough for newcomers who would find the website from a search on Google Maps.

The Solution

I redesigned the site so that it introduces visitors to the parish, persuading them to visit for Mass. The new site, still on the eCatholic platform but with a customized DIY theme, included many improvements throughout.

  • The 2018 eCatholic theme was changed to a recent eCatholic theme and customized with CSS for clean, white pages with a blue page header that followed parish branding and matched the parish Flocknote style.
  • The new home page hero used a custom graphic that started as a photo of St. Alban’s chalice.
  • Following the blue, gold, and white branding, a custom, elegant gold pattern was used sparingly for backgrounds for important sections.
  • The footer included gold custom graphics that began as photos of St. Alban’s censor and bells.
  • The site map was reorganized and the navigation streamlined.
  • The home page focused on persuading newcomers to visit for Mass. Since 2024 I’ve made improvements to my Front Doors.
  • All of the text on the site was reviewed and much of it was substantially revised or rewritten from scratch to tell stories for audiences unfamiliar with the St. Alban’s and the Ordinariate. That was 2024. Today I create parish websites with much less text.
  • The existing images were reused, and all needed to be resized for the new eCatholic theme. My websites today use professional photography—either your photographer or mine.
  • The Ordinariate content was reorganized and enhanced.
  • A blog post about traditional ways of living a healthy Catholic lifestyle was added to stimulate thought and discussions over time.
  • The ongoing administration by parish staff was simplified with some housekeeping of the files and new documentation.

Working with Sandra Ham was super easy. She communicates well, making sure that we had plenty of opportunities to provide input on the design and to review, test, and comment along the way. We love the site and recommend her to other parishes!
